Versions of the IPUMS from before 2006

This page contains links to archival IPUMS data and documentation from versions before 2006. Please note that these files differ from current IPUMS data files. Users needing current IPUMS data should go to the main IPUMS website. Users needing archival IPUMS data from 2006 through early 2008 should see the archival extract systems from those years.

IPUMS Documentation prior to 2006

These early versions of IPUMS documentation were built with dated web technlogies and are cumbersome to use. They are available to researchers as zipped archive files. In most cases, users should be able to unzip the archive onto a PC and open the "index.html" file in a browser. If this proves cumbersome or difficult, it is also possible to manually navigate the files to look for particular variable descriptions or other forms of documentation. Archived documentation files are available for 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005.

IPUMS File Layout and Data files prior to 2006

The table below provides links to all available versions of the IPUMS data that were being offered in 1995, 2001, and 2005. The data files are stored as zipped ASCII files. The files must be decompressed prior to use. The File Layouts are SPSS command files with all variable and value labels. The command files functioned with versions of SPSS available in 2006, though they will most likely require some modification for more recent versions of SPSS and for other statistical software.
